Notes re Director of Public Works's salary.
In 1900 the present scale of salary was introduced:-
Maximum amount 27,800 @ 3/-
Being on a dollar basis, the sterling value of the salary is greater for leave and pension purposes - vide G.0.120(c) and is as follows:-
For Leave 87,800 @ 4/- For Pension 87,800 @ 3/8
£1,170
= £1,560 = £1,430
In 1911 I was granted a personal Allowance of £150 per annum, payable only whilst on actual service in the Colony. My salary thus became :-
For service
For leave
For pension
£1,320.
£1,560.
£1,430.
In 1919 a Special Allowance of 20% (maximum amount £200) was granted to the service generally, increasing my salary to:-
For service
For leave
For pension
£1,520.
£1,560.
£1,430.
The salary now offered to me is:-
For Service
£1,500
£1,660.
Personel Allowance
150
For Leave
£1,500.
For pension
£1,500.
The benefit which I would receive under the new scale up
to the time of my retirement would amount to about $175 per month.
My pension, under the new scale, would however only be increased by £42 per annum or 5%.
Having regarding to the enormous increase in the cost of living at home and in Income Tax, I would respectfully ask that a more substantial increase in pension be granted to me.
I would suggest that my Personal Allowance should be incorporated with my salary. My pension would then be increased by £132 or practically 15,
Sd.
W. CHATHAM, Director of Public Works.
23rd October, 1920.
